Getting ready for a volunteering adventure is exciting — but when it comes to packing, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Closing your suitcase can sometimes feel like a battle… but don’t worry, you’re not alone!

Here are some smart and practical tips to help you pack with purpose, save space, and travel light:

Tip 1: Roll your clothes — maximize every inch

Instead of folding your clothes the traditional way, roll them up tightly. Rolling not only saves space, but it also helps prevent wrinkles. You’ll be amazed at how much more you can fit into your backpack or suitcase. T-shirts, jeans, lightweight sweaters — roll them all!

Tip 2: Use compression bags — organize and compress

Compression bags are a traveler’s best friend. They come in different sizes and allow you to separate your items by category (pants, t-shirts, undergarments, etc.). Simply fill the bags and press out the air. It makes packing so much easier!

Tip 3: Pack only the essentials — be intentional

One of the biggest mistakes travelers make is packing “just in case” items. Instead, start by checking the weather at your destination. If you’re going to a tropical climate, you probably won’t need that heavy jacket. Think about your activities: Will you really need a swimsuit? Hiking boots?

If you’re not 100% sure you’ll use it — leave it behind.

Bonus Tip: Leave a little space for memories

Chances are, you’ll bring back souvenirs, gifts, or even just small tokens from the people you meet. Packing light on the way out means more room for what you’ll gather along the way — and for the stories you’ll collect.
